Location (view location)
The 21 megawatt (MW) biomass power plant is located in Styria, one of the best wooded regions in Austria. In a distance of 60 to 70 km there are plenty of forests, forest farmers and sawmills. The biomass power plant provides app. 25.000 households with electricity indirectly by selling 4,3 MW electricity to the local power net provider Energie Steiermark AG. It has an operation time of 8000 hours annually and most of the 14,3 MW heat produced is sold to Mayr Melnhof. The remaining 20% of heat are used to produce 20.000 tons of pellets per annum. In addition the plant is producing 2,5 MW of steam, which is also sold to a fixed purchaser.
Concept
The Gaishorn biomass power plant was put into operation in 2008. The plant is based on a proven technology and the strategically favorable settlement next to two main long term heat and steam purchaser respectively one substantial raw material supplier, who secures a key part of revenues and the raw material supply. The annual raw material demand is covered by 50 % from Mayr Melnhof Systemholz GmbH and by 50 % from the local wood market (wood savings and wood chips or sawmill waste). Sawmill waste and sawmill dust, which are needed for the production of pellets – currently max. 20.000 t/a – are bought at local saw mills within a radius of 100 km. The raw material demand equals app. 110.000 srm/a, which is app. 95.000 MWh. The concept of the Gaishorn biomass power plant does not allow an expansion in the areas of heat and electricity production. But pellet as a fuel with a promising future offer a development potential. With a direct distribution it is realistic to double the annual production quantity from 20.000 to 40.000 t/a. Furthermore it is planed to lead the currently still damp raw material over a dehumidification system, so that the moisture percentage is reduced and the heat rate rises.
