Location
The plant is located in the heavily forrested area of Austria called Waldviertel. Situated near the town of Allentsteig and close to a military training ground, it will supply electricitiy to the national grid and heat to the town and living quarters of the training ground through the district heating grid operated by Fernwärmegenossenschaft Allentsteig. Placed next to an existing wood processing facility, the plant boasts excellent access over county roads for lorries delivering raw materials.
Concept
The plant consumes 10,000 dry tonnes of wood waste, mostly from surrounding areas. It delivers more than 7,000 MWh of electricity and 19,000 MWh of heat per annum to local heating grids via a contract with EVN. Built by Polytechnik, its ORC technology allows steady generation of electric current while delivering heat based on demand, which is much higher in the winter months. With a local storage capacity of a month's worth of wood chips, the plant shares a common raw materials supply line with Cycleenergy’s other wood burning biomass power plants.
The plant has been in operation since April 2008.
