Location
The plant is located near a lock on the river Danube, northwest of Linz in Upper Austria . Nudged on the river bank near the river’s hydro plant (Donaukraftwerk) it is another excellent example of a decentralized energy source, supplying heat to some of Aschach’s 2,200 inhabitants and 2 MW of electricity to the national grid. The plant can be supplied with raw materials by lorry or by barge directly from the river.
Concept
Cycleenergy operates the plant in cooperation with Porr AG, a renowned Austrian construction company, who built the plant. Consuming 18,000 dry tonnes of wood waste the plant delivers 15,000 MWh of electricity and 19,000 MWh of heat per annum to local heating grids. Built by Axima, its steam turbine technology allows steady generation of electric current while delivering heat based on demand, which is much higher in the winter months. The plant shares a common raw materials supply line with Cycleenergy’s other wood burning biomass power plants.
The plant has been in operation since May of 2007.
